Eligibility
- The Foundation supports local, state, and regional organizations in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, and the Middle East in the countries where the projects are based. It also supports organizations located in upper-income countries working with local partners in these areas. It does not support projects in post-Soviet states or Balkan states.
- Most types of organizations that can provide evidence of their non-governmental status or charitable purpose are eligible to apply, including non-governmental organizations, nonprofit organizations; civil society organizations; community-based organizations; and colleges, universities, and other academic institutions.
- Government agencies and religious organizations may be included as project partners but are not eligible for direct funding.
Benefit
There is no minimum or maximum grant size. It is anticipated that most grants will fall in the $25,000-$50,000 per year range.
- The CFH Foundation Grant is made for a one- or two-year period. Second-year funding is conditional on the provision of a satisfactory progress report, interim financial report, and work plan. Renewal requests for projects that were not originally approved as multi-year projects may be considered, but require a new application.
- The CFH Foundation Grant awards are made twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall, with applications due several months prior. Timelines are publicized on the website in advance and may differ slightly from year to year.
- The CFH Foundation Grant will consider only one proposal from an organization in any calendar year.
- Reporting requirements are designed to avoid burdensome work for grantees while providing sufficient information for the Foundation to assess expenditures, accomplishments, and any unanticipated difficulties in performing as proposed. Reporting is expected as follows:
- Final reports are due within one year following the initial application or the beginning of the last year of funding, whichever is later.
Interim progress reports, interim financial reports, and second-year work plans for multi-year grants are due 30 days before the end of the recipient’s first grant period.
Report templates and due dates will be sent with the initial grant letter.
What the Conservation, Food & Health, CFH Foundation Grant does not fund
The Conservation, Food & Health, CFH Foundation Grant has specific policies and procedures regarding grant-making. It does not typically fund the following:
- Overhead or indirect project costs: The foundation does not provide funding for administrative or operational expenses.
- General operating support: Funding is not provided for the general functioning of organizations.
Direct food, health, or other humanitarian aid: The foundation focuses on supporting projects that have a long-term impact in the areas of conservation, food, and health. - Eco-tourism: Projects related to eco-tourism are not eligible for funding.
Buildings and capital improvements: The foundation does not fund construction or infrastructure projects. - Projects ultimately intended for private gain: The foundation expects any intellectual property developed with their grant to be made public and accessible.
Salaries for Executive Directors of U.S. and European-based organizations: Funding is not provided for the salaries of Executive Directors of organizations based in the U.S. and Europe. - Project expenses incurred before the grant is awarded: The foundation does not reimburse expenses incurred prior to receiving the grant.
How to apply
To apply for the Conservation, Food & Health, CFH Foundation Grant, follow these steps:
- Log in to the online grants portal using the provided link. If you are a non-U.S. organization, do not enter a tax-ID number. Instead, enter “12-134567” to complete your registration without a U.S. tax-ID.
- Once you are in the system, click on the orange button to access the grants application system.
- Enter the access code “cfhgrants” when prompted. This will allow you to begin your application.
- Follow the instructions and complete the application form.
- Please note that the application process consists of two phases: a short concept application and if invited, a full proposal. Ensure that you have completed all sections of the application before submitting.
- To be considered for the foundation’s November meetings, you must submit your online concept application by July 1. If July 1 falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline will be the next business day. After the deadline, the Conservation, Food & Health, CFH Foundation Grant will review the applications and notify applicants within one month if they have been invited to submit a proposal. Please note that only one application should be submitted per review cycle.
